Join us to learn about painting with oil pastels with Artist Barbara Simmons. Barbara is known for her paintings of Georgian Bay landscapes with rocks, clouds, wind, and waves. She will demonstrate her experimental oil pastel techniques that she uses as a means of simplifying the landscape. Then, we will try our hands at oil pastels, and mixing them with acrylic paint.
Come and learn with us, this is a fun and casual program with the promise of a few lighthearted moments. Beginners welcome
A visual artist since birth and Visual Arts teacher for 30 years, Barbara Simmons has tinkered with it all. She eventually settled on painting as her favourite mode of artistic expression, but even then takes a bit of an a la carte approach, often mixing mediums and styles with drawing, printmaking, sewing and collage. Always open to experimentation and to trying new things, her artwork evolves with her varied interests. Her art training was at Ontario College of Art in Editorial Design and Illustration. It was there she honed her approach to typography and design, with attention to letterforms both hand drawn and mechanically reproduced. She passed her knowledge and love of calligraphy and hand lettering on to many students over the years. Her calligraphy adorns countless certificates and awards in drawers and basement boxes in the homes of former high school students of Durham Region.
