Let's Get Pedal Powered with Streets Alive!

Get your 'Cycle On' Orillia! Streets Alive 2019 kicks off this Saturday, June 15 in the Peter Street Arts District.

The theme is Bicycles and the public art project is called ‘Pedal Powered’. Why Bicycles? The City of Orillia and Ontario’s Lake Country is an incredible cycling destination, with trails along beautiful shorelines and quiet roads through rolling hills and bucolic countryside. Artists have been tasked with using the bicycle as their starting point and adding creative elements that will amaze and delight all who see the sculptures for this year’s project. The public will discover bicycles with wings, bicycles with trailers, dragon bicycles, hand carved wooden bicycles as well as wheels that are enhanced with stained glass, welded elements and beautifully painted images. The entire downtown core will reflect the bicycle theme, with 20 bike sculptures along the sidewalks, dozens of decorated bicycles in shop windows and brightly painted bicycle wheels installed on street posts. The goal of the 2019 project is two fold: to get the community thinking of cycling as a great option and mode of active transportation AND to continue to build art and culture in downtown Orillia and draw locals and visitors in to explore and discover our unique and creative community. The bicycle sculptures will be on display until Thanksgiving weekend and the public is invited to vote on their favourites. Voting is done in person at either Jack & Maddy - kids store or at OMAH - Orillia Museum of Art & History. Your first chance to see these amazing sculptures is this Saturday at the KickOff Event! In addition to the art, there will be local bike shop repair stations, cycling maps and information, free Cycling Tours, Yoga on the street and music and treats. Anyone who cycles in to the Kick-Off event will have their name entered in a draw to win a gift bag full of awesome cycling related gifts and ‘swag’. Hope to see you there!
