Festival of Banners 2014 Retrospective
What a summer it has been for the return of Festival of Banners at OMAH! After a year's hiatus during the renovations of OMAH, participants were back in full swing with enthusiasm and creativity. The 2014 theme, "Historic Orillia - A Growing Community", celebrated both Orillia's art culture and rich heritage. Artists went above and beyond in researching iconic buildings, people, and events, to display Orillia's history. From portraits of Franklin Carmichael, Glenn Gould, Sir Sam Steele and Gordon Lightfoot, to the HMCS Orillia, the Orillia Opera House, Stephen Leacock's home, and Couchiching Park; the stories behind each banner were tremendous.
The banners painted the streets of Downtown Orillia from June to October, where residents and tourists alike would pause to enjoy the diversity in designs. From those who picked up a paintbrush for the first time - both young and old - to seasoned artists, each participant's work was proudly displayed.
Now we come to the end of another successful year, and to celebrate OMAH is hosting a Festival of Banners Gala on November 8th for the artists and the public. Any remaining banners will be on display and sold first-come-first-serve for $40. Join us for closing remarks and the announcedment of the upcoming 2015 theme.
Special thanks to all the hard work of Sam Vessios in the revival and organization of this year's festival along with the redesign of its logo and application forms, Ninette Gyorody for carrying the festival forward, and Shannon Hawke for the public brochure design.
