The Latin words Arte and Factum are defined as “by or using art” and “something made” respectively. In the early 19th century these two words were paired to form the modern English word “artifact”. It was first used to describe archaeological material in 1890 and became widely used in museums to describe the objects in their permanent collections. Arte Factum explores a selection of recent artifacts that were added to the museum’s permanent collection and seeks to provide insight into why museums collect.
