The Spirit of Mariposa

Saturday, October 1, 2016 to Sunday, December 31, 2017

The Spirit of Mariposa  is a 15 month exhibition at The Orillia Museum of Art & History in celebration of Orillia and Canada's 150th anniversary.

Launching on Saturday, October 1, with a special reception on Friday, October 14, The Spirit of Mariposa will run until December 31, 2017. There will be a series of community engagement programs in conjunction with the exhibit that will run throughout 2017.

In Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, Stephen Leacock demonstrated that Mariposa could be any small town in Canada; at once universal, yet incomparably local. As our geography, people, and stories grow, so does our identity and sense of place. Gordon Lightfoot, Stephen Leacock, Elizabeth Wyn Wood and Arthur Shilling all told their unique story through different mediums. These artists are pioneers of their time, making art for all time. Follow us along the shores of Lake Couchiching as we hold up a lens to our community, exploring our past and illuminating the future in order to inspire our citizens, visitors, musicians, artists, and writers to compose stories of their own.

These are our stories. This is our place.
